Insulation helps beat energy saving targets!

Insulation played a significant part in a target-beating reduction of domestic energy consumption, according to regulator Ofgem.

The installation of insulation helped eight energy providers beat government targets of cutting household energy use by 130TWh in the three years to March 31st as part of the Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC).

Energy firms exceeded their EEC obligation by cutting consumption by 187TWh during the second phase of the programme, having already surpassed their targets in the first phase of the scheme, which ran from 2002 to 2005.

The single biggest contributor to the cuts was found to be insulation.

“Nearly 60 per cent of the energy savings achieved under EEC2 2005-2008 came from the installation of insulation measures. Over 10 per cent was achieved in lighting, with heating and appliances making up the remainder,” Ofgem reported.

British Gas, EDF Energy, npower, Opus Energy, Powergen, ScottishPower, Scottish & Southern Energy and Telecom Plus now go into the EEC successor, Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) carrying over the surplus savings.
