A new product from Knauf Insulation is changing the way we insulate rooms in the roof. Room-in-Roof Roll ensures easy and quick installation as well as excellent thermal performance. The product recently forced a change of specification on a residential development at a prestigious location in Chester.
Springfield Residential Development Company produced a brief which aimed to ‘create a landmark house, with a range of features to attract a discerning homebuyer.’ The developers were aware of the increasing need for economic, sustainable housing and every element of the construction was considered with this in mind.
Room-in-Roof Roll is a glass mineral wool roll with an integrated, overlapping foil faced layer, which is manufactured using recycled bottles and is classified as Zero ODP and Zero GWP. The product therefore contributed positively to the project’s aims, particularly with respect to its contribution to the total number of credits that would be awarded under the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Insulating pitched roofs has long been an intricate and complex job, however the problem was intensified in Chester because of the unusual nature of the roof. Access was only possible from scaffolding as the roof was located above an open plan galleried entrance hall.
The exposed design meant that a durable insulation with excellent thermal performance was key. For optimised thermal efficiency it was essential that there were no air gaps left between the insulation and the rafters. Room-in-Roof Roll is designed to ‘friction fit’ between the rafters, ensuring all spaces are filled, eliminating heat loss via air gaps (which are commonly associated with rigid foam boards in this application) and thereby maximising the thermal performance of the roof.
Stuart Brown of Springfield Residential Development Company commented, “It was difficult in the past to get the perfect finish with rigid foam boards; generally two layers would be needed and as well as being time consuming to cut it’s also very difficult not to leave air gaps between the rigid foam boards and the rafters. As Room-in-Roof Roll friction fits into place and only requires one layer, it was installed 4 times quicker than rigid foam boards and has provided a better solution for the homeowner. From now on Room-in-Roof Roll will always be our first choice.

It’s an interesting development – sounds like something similar to velcro – with overlapping bits that create a thermal seal.
